Creating a Colorful Monochromatic Look

Different shades of the same color create a colorful monochromatic look.

I mentioned in my post on Friday that I was visiting my parents for the weekend. The morning after I arrived I was having coffee when my mom walked into the room. She was wearing the exact same color combination of a blush top and burgundy pants that I had photographed for my blog! I hadn’t mentioned one thing about that outfit to her. I guess colorful minds think alike.

Different shades of the same color create an interesting and chic monochromatic look.

Color Coding

Speaking of color, this outfit is a good example of a monochromatic look. These looks don’t have to be all one color; they can also feature different shades of the same color. In this outfit, the pink and the burgundy are actually different shades of red. Pink is red mixed with white. Burgundy is a dark purplish red.

This combination of the blush pink top against the burgundy pants works because the two shades are so different from each other. Wearing them looks intentional. If the colors were just a little different from each other, say for example, a light shade of peach for the top and then a slightly lighter shade of peach for the bottom, then it might look more like an accidental mismatch.

The thin straps at the top of this blush pink top update a classic blouse that can be worn with almost anything.

I picked up this Lush brand pink top at Nordstrom this summer. I love its flowy style and drapey sleeves. The thin straps that cross the v-neck add a modern update to this silhouette, making it easy to look stylish, but not overly trendy.

This is a pretty classic blouse that can be worn with so many things so it’s a piece that will live a long life in my closet. The blouse is made of 100% polyester. It is very soft and comfortable to wear, but it is thin so I had a cami on underneath.

These Old Navy Rockstar jeans are comfortable and don't bag out at the end of the day.

My burgundy pants are from Old Navy. They are the Rockstar midrise skinny jeans. Some of my other Rockstar jeans get a little baggy by the end of the day, but this pair does not stretch out as much as my other ones. They are still pretty comfortable throughout the day.

These Plunder earrings feature mini pearl flowers and crystal pink balls.

Plunder Design had the perfect jewelry to match this outfit! My earrings are the Nicholina and feature mini pearl flowers and pale pink crystal balls. As with so many of Plunder’s earrings, they are very light and don’t pull my ears down.

This Plunder bracelet features pink crystals and a magnetic closure.

My bracelet is the Broderick, which has pink crystals in a gold setting and a magnetic closure.

This Plunder necklace features pink glass beads with an antique pink cross.

Finally, my long necklace pendant is the Tony and features pink glass beads with an antique pink cross. This is probably one of my favorite Plunder pieces!

A maroon saddle bag is the perfect fall accessory to carry all of your essentials.

I am carrying a burgundy saddle bag that I picked up from the Hallmark store in my town earlier this summer. You can see it with another outfit in this post. It’s a great size for all of your essentials.

Gray suede booties are a perfect alternative when you want to wear something other than black boots.

My light gray suede boots are from the Wild Diva Lounge brand. I bought this pair last year and wore them quite a bit over the fall and winter. I thought the boots showed up nicely against the dark burgundy pants. The small heel on the boots also make them comfortable to walk in.

Different shades of the same color create a colorful monochromatic look.

I wish I had thought to take a photo of my mom’s outfit when she came downstairs. She was so cute! The next day she had on a pale green shirt and olive-colored pants. I wouldn’t have thought to put those two together, but she looked great. My mom may have this colorful monochromatic look down just right.
