Hello there! My name is Cathy and I’m a mom of four boys (five if you count my husband, who is really just a big kid himself). Thanks so much for stopping by! I’m very excited to embark on this blog adventure as I continue my journey toward midlife. I’ll be sharing stories of my life and times with a little look at my twist on classic styles and a few of my favorite things. I truly believe in being positive and optimistic about the future and hope that I can empower readers to see their full potential and see the brighter side of life. To me, every woman is a pillar of strength, so let’s shout that out to the world!
Here’s a little of my own background. I love to read fiction and biographies constantly have a pile of books for future reading on my dresser. I also love to travel, which was probably born out of my childhood as a “military brat.” My father was in the Air Force and we traveled practically all over the world and the United States. Though I don’t travel as much as I’d like to these days, I will never tire of visiting a new place, whether it’s across town or across an ocean. I run – not as regularly as I would like – but enough to have completed several 5Ks as well as my first half marathon last November at the ripe old age of 47! It was one of the best experiences of my life and I plan to get a few more under my belt before I put away my running shoes for good.
I’ve been fortunate to enjoy two careers so far in my life. I spent 10 years as a journalist and then switched to public service, where I worked for a local government for 18 years. Although I loved my work, my husband and I felt that I needed to spend more time with our family, so I left my full-time job to do just that. I am working part-time from home and am so appreciative and fortunate that I am able to continuing contributing to the world and devote quality time to my husband and kids.
After packing up my suits and work dresses, I discovered that I had nothing to wear but, well, suits and work dresses! I loved dressing in classic looks for work – structured blazers, sheath dresses, pencil skirts, and simple heels. I always believed that femininity mixed with modesty and mystery was more alluring in a woman; I think that’s what draws me so much to fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly. While I don’t proclaim to be anywhere near them on the fashion scale, I do strive to emulate their classic and elegant style sense with a little bit of a twist – a colorful pair of shoes, a denim vest, or a vintage leather blazer. I’ve never been one to go along with every latest trend, but I do hope I can give you some ideas on how to mix what’s in your closet with a few modern pieces to give you a classic and fun look.
But style is more than about what you wear. Miriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “a distinctive manner or custom of behaving or conducting oneself.” The Oxford Dictionaries says it’s “a particular procedure by which something is done; a manner or way.” I hope that I am approaching middle age in the same style that I’ve approached the rest of my life: with determination, enthusiasm and creativity. This is cathyvstyle! I hope that the stories and outfits that I share with you on this blog will reflect some of that. But this is a two-way street, and I’m also counting on you to show me a few things, too because contrary to what everyone says about an old dog, you can teach this one new tricks!
Thank you again for stopping by and I invite you to continue with me on this journey. I don’t know where it’s going or where we’ll end up, but I hope we’ll have have some fun along the way!
