I’ve lived in Virginia for 35 years and I love it. But I probably would not have come here had it not been for my dad, who retired in Virginia after a 20-year career in the Air Force.
As the oldest child, I got to experience my dad’s assignments all over the United States as well as overseas. The only place I did not go was to Vietnam during the war. We moved back to Guam to stay with family while he was there. I remember hearing his voice on cassette tapes that he would send to my mom. We would listen to them in a bedroom. I was so young that I don’t remember much of what he said, but I do remember trying to talk to him in the tape recorder. It was a real treat to hear his voice after not seeing him or knowing when he would return.
My dad did come back and he continued to serve, taking us wherever the Air Force assigned him. He never bragged about his military service, but I know that both he and my mom made sacrifices to live that life. Though it was hard to move every couple of years, I was proud to be a military brat. I knew that whatever my dad did at his job, he was helping to keep our family – and many others – safe and free.
I’ve been wanting to style a camo piece for the office and found this one at Kohls. When I slipped into this bomber jacket, I couldn’t help but think of my dad in his uniform. His “fatigues,” as he used to call them, were a similar dark green and brown. But this jacket is not as stiff as his uniforms were. This one is made of 100% rayon and is very soft to the touch. It’s a light material and makes a perfect layer for fall.
I’ve shared a few work outfits on the blog before (here and here), but this is the first time I’ve tried camo for the office. With a simple sheath dress and classic accessories, this jacket is a great work piece.
Although I think that it will partner nicely with a cream or white dress underneath, I am going for a more traditional pairing with my black “scuba” dress. While this dress is not really made of scuba material, it is very similar in that it has a smoothing effect, a slight sheen and stretches as you move.
While I like the black and camo together, I’m adding more color to this look with a burgundy scarf. The scarf is a great shade for fall and adds a nice splash of colors to the outfit.
Because the overall look of this outfit is dark, my beige wedge booties help to lighten things up. These are the Chinese Laundry brand and they are a nice alternative to a traditional pump.
Since this is a work look, I am keeping my accessories simple and classic. I like to pair gold with warmer colors because they provide a nice background for the gold to stand out. I am wearing simple gold hoop earrings and gold bangles. For a handbag, I am carrying a simple black clutch.
I think this outfit is appropriate in a casual work environment, but it could also pass in a more formal office depending on the culture of your organization. Camo is pretty versatile and easy to dress up or down. I have a few other camo pieces in my closet that I’ll be styling later in the season.
I’m sure I’ll think of my dad every single time.
