It’s My Party and I’ll Mix Patterns If I Want To

Adding flare jeans to a camouflage and leopard combination spices up these classic pieces in a fall outfit.

My birthday was on Saturday and I thought it would be fun to show you an outfit that celebrates all the styles that I have loved throughout my life. No matter where I’ve been and when – high school punk rock lover, college retail worker, young journalist, midlife public servant – these are the styles that I’ve gravitated back to time and time again.

Let me warn you: there’s A LOT going on in this outfit: camo, leopard, flare jeans – but I think it works in a fun way. Let’s get started.

Both camo and leopard are considered neutrals.  That means you can wear them with pretty much any color. I have always loved these patterns and decided to combine them together with two other pieces that are on my top 10 favorites list: flare jeans and my t-shirt from The Police reunion concert in 2008.

A concert t-shirt serves as a unique layer under a camouflage utility jacket.

The Police is my all-time favorite band. I have loved their reggae/punk rock music since I was in high school. I then followed lead singer Sting for decades when he went solo, but the closest I ever got to him was through MTV (when they were still showing music videos).

The Police reunited in 2007 – 2008 for a world tour and I saw them at the John Paul Jones Arena at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The show was amazing! The trio blew through all of their hits with crazy energy that belied their age. I hope that I can have that much energy when I reach their age!

A camo utility jacket is a perfect light jacket for fall.

Layering over the t-shirt is this cute camo jacket from Charlotte Russe. I am pleasantly surprised at how high quality this jacket is. It’s 97% cotton and 3% spandex. It’s very soft and extremely comfortable. You can see me wearing camo in a different way in this post.

Because of my flare jeans, I didn’t want to be swallowed up by the jacket and the extra material in the jeans. I added this black belt from Target to give the outfit some shape and structure. It’s a web belt with grommets and has a military feel to it, so it pairs perfectly with the camo jacket.

I mentioned in my last post that I’ve been leaning more toward bootcut and flare jeans lately. I think they are more figure flattering by helping to elongate my legs and flowing smoothly down toward my shoes. In other words, they don’t hug every curve.

These flare jeans are pretty extreme with their flare and I love it! They are the Level 99 brand, which I had not heard of before. I bought them from my favorite secondhand online boutique, thredUp, and they still had their original brand tags on them. These are 98% cotton and 2% spandex so they have the tiniest bit of stretch. I had to have these hemmed a bit because they were super long, and I am pretty happy with how they turned out.

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know I love leopard print. When I saw these boots at Target on a milk run, I just had to have them. These booties are about 2.25 inches high so they’re pretty easy and comfortable to walk in.

A Softer Touch

Because this outfit is a little busy, I’m not adding too much jewelry. However, I thought a few feminine touches would help to soften the masculine feel of the overall look. This leather bracelet features some pretty floral touches. The matching earrings also help to lighten up the look with their cream color and floral design.

The bracelet and the earrings were my Plunder Posse for September. Posse is Plunder’s special program in which they send you special pieces each month for a flat rate of $25.00 with tax and shipping included. The pieces are always a surprise. There is no sign up fee and you can cancel anytime. This bracelet and earrings are not available online, but I’ve linked to some similar ones below.

If you’d like to find out more about the Posse program, click here. Then go to the “Enroll Now” link at the bottom. Don’t worry, you won’t be signed up for anything. But you will see the Plunder Posse link at the bottom. Click on that to learn more about this fun program.

I love my jewelry, but this purse definitely stands out among my accessories. I picked this up at a little boutique when I was visiting my parents in North Carolina last month. Unfortunately, I don’t know the brand name and there is no tag in the purse.

I’m not sure what caught my eyes first: the beautiful colors, the elegant design, the gold hardware, or the 50% discount off an already reduced price! It was all too good to pass up.

A purse featuring warm colors is a perfect match for a camo utility jacket.

So there you have it, my lifelong fashion loves all rolled up into one outfit. I hope you enjoy my “birthday suit.” It’s a bit different from the one I was born in, but both have been surrounded by love, energy and the promise of many more years to come.
