A quote by American author Alice Hoffman sums up how I feel about the color red: “How could I have been so stupid to have ignored everything I’d had in my life? The color red alone was worth kingdoms.” I couldn’t agree more. Red is my favorite color. According to the fashion experts, we will be seeing a lot of this color in the coming months.
Significance of Red
Over the years, I have collected a wide array of red wardrobe pieces. I have red shoes, red rain boots, a red rain coat, red dresses, and a red purse (or two). My front door is red and I also used to have red walls in my kitchen. But once I found out that red stimulates the appetite, I changed the walls to a neutral sand like color. My appetite doesn’t need additional stimulants LOL!
Red signifies energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. I am drawn to red clothes and accessories because of their vibrancy and warmth. I also like how they pair with my olive skin and dark hair. When I saw these pants on sale for $19.99 at Dress Barn a couple of weeks ago, I had to add them to my red collection.
These are the Roz & Ali Signature Fit Ankle Pants in Lobster Red (I love that name!). They’re made of cotton, polyester and spandex so they stretch and move with you. I wore them to work earlier this week with a blazer. I’ll show you that look in a few weeks. Today, I want to give you a more casual look. That’s the great thing about these pants; they can be dressed up or down with a change in top and accessories. After trying these pants on in the store in my usual size, I found them to be a little baggy so I sized down for a better fit. I’m so glad I did.
A New Day
This casual outfit is one that you could wear out to coffee, lunch or another laid back affair and still look good and comfortable. Black would be a little too dressy and I’ve done that mix a few times before. For something a little different, I went for a dark denim top. I found this one at Target for $19.99.
The shirt is part of the “A New Day” brand that just launched at Target this week. Target says that the brand is a versatile mix-and-match women’s brand that will cover you for weekend occasions, at work, and with friends. The brand features a modern take on a classic aesthetic and incredible prints and patterns. This shirt is 100% cotton and very soft. It will definitely be on frequent rotation in my closet this fall and winter.
If you read my post on Monday (or any of the latest fashion mags), you’ll know that animal print is also a big trend for fall. I have a ton of leopard print in my closet and I thought this belt and these shoes added a perfect touch of pattern to this outfit.
My belt is old but Amazon has this one that is similar. My leopard print kitten heels are no longer available with Clarks, but below are other options (please note that I get commission for purchases or clicks made through these links).
I pulled out this old Nine West bag that I picked up earlier this year at a thrift store. It was only $3 and is still in great shape. The weave of the bag adds some texture to this outfit and the color also brings out the tan in the belt and the shoes.
I kept my jewelry casual as well. I’m wearing the Miley inspirational necklace from Plunder. It is an antique bronze chain with iridescent beads on each side. The beads lead down to a bronze sparrow pendant and then another pendant that says “If it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you.” The Miley has been retired, but click here to see all of Plunder’s inspirational pieces.
I’m also wearing Plunder’s antique gold drop earrings and the Hope bracelet. I picked all of these pieces because I thought the burnished gold and bronze colors paired well with the casual vibe of the top and also brought out the brown in the belt and shoes. I am an independent Stylist for Plunder Design and receive a commission if you purchase any of the products through my links and/or website.
All of my accessories work well together, but don’t overpower the red pants. For me, that’s the key to wearing vibrant pieces. Let the other pieces complement the main piece, not compete for attention. Then again, competition is never an issue for the color red.
Do you have red in your wardrobe? If not, take heart in a quote by my favorite style maven, Audrey Hepburn, who said, “There is a shade of red for every woman.” Now all you need to do is to find yours.
