When I was little, my mom used to make pumpkin soup every Halloween. She would scrape out all the meat in a pumpkin and then boil it down until the meat was tender. She would then add some half and half, salt and pepper and heat it through. In the meantime, she would have egg noodles boiling on a back burner. When they were done, she would drain them and set a ladle full in each of our bowls. Over that, she would pour the pumpkin soup mixture. I’ll be honest, it may not have looked appetizing at the time, but it was still the best tasting soup I ever had.
I looked forward to eating that soup every Halloween. In my eyes, it heralded the official start of fall in our house. I knew that no matter how cool the autumn evenings would get, that pumpkin soup would warm me right through.
I have a similar feeling about this poncho sweater. In fact, when the challenge came out for this month’s Ageless Style Linkup to style sweaters and booties, I immediately thought of this top. It’s something I reach for every fall because it wraps me in warmth and is just plain cozy. But I also love that it’s not overwhelming – not too bulky, long or thick. Like my mom’s pumpkin soup, it’s pretty perfect to me.
In case you’re wondering, the Ageless Style Linkup features 10 women styling something based on one theme. The post runs the first Tuesday of each month. Please visit the other women in the linkup below for inspiration, fun, and great ageless style!
I think I may have picked up this sweater at Marshall’s a few years back. It’s made of 100% cotton and washes and dries easily. The majority of it is black but it has white thread throughout, similar to a marble design. It also has a cute asymmetrical collar with buttons down the side.
Because I didn’t want to be in dark colors from head to toe, I am wearing my striped tee from Target. This tee has a nice, snug fit but it is not overly tight.
I’m wearing my Old Navy micro-flare jeans. I think if I had worn skinny jeans, the proportions would have been a little awkward. To be honest, I think I would have looked like a bobblehead with the top portion of my outfit much bigger than the bottom half. I think the slight flare at the bottom of these jeans adds interest to the overall look.
Speaking of the bottom of this outfit, let’s get to other half of the style challenge: the booties! I didn’t want this to be a completely black and white outfit, and I thought these burgundy booties would add a nice splash of color. They are the X Appeal brand and are faux suede. The block heel is about 1.5 inches high so they are pretty comfortable to walk in.
This is a casual outfit, but that doesn’t mean it can’t use a little sparkle! I wore these earrings in my post yesterday and I just love their vintage look. These earrings have a matching long necklace, which helps to break up the front of the dark sweater. I’m also wearing the Lucinda bracelet, which is not part of the necklace and earring set, but I think it still matches nicely.
If you read yesterday’s post, you’ll also know that I’m participating in a thrifted style challenge with some other bloggers on Instagram this week. The challenge requires that we feature something thrifted each day. It could be clothing, accessories, furniture or home decor. You can find the challenge on Instagram at #thriftedchicstylechallenge. My black backpack is my thrifted item today. I picked this up a couple of weekends ago at Clothes Mentor, a women’s resale store. It is in perfect condition without any scuffs, rips or stains. Even the inside is immaculate! This purse was only $12. I have been looking for a backpack purse that was a little dressier than my Ameribag and this one is perfect with its gold accents. I can wear this with a casual outfit, such as I’m wearing today, or take it to work.
To top off my look, I threw on one of my winter caps. This is similar to a fisherman’s cap and does a great job of keeping my head warm and stylish. Now that it’s getting cooler, I’ll be wearing my hats more often.
We shot these photos this past Saturday and it was pretty breezy. The hat and my sweater kept me pretty warm and comfortable throughout the day, much like Mom’s pumpkin soup used to do.
