The other night my best friend – a woman I’ve known for 43 years – called me. She actually Facetimed me, so I was tickled pink when I saw her name come up on my phone and it was a bonus to see her. Because of the schedules of our two families as well as distance (she lives in another state), it has been many years since we last visited each other.
Hey! Guess what’s on TV right now?
“The Sound of Music!” I said without hesitation. It was indeed being broadcast and we both laughed after I said it.

“A glamorous woman is always elegant, but she also possesses an air of mystery and excitement.” – Ralph Lauren
I love this quote, especially the “air of mystery,” because I think that is one of the most important accessories for a woman (the other is her smile). In my opinion, there should be an air of mystery about a woman and the outfit she chooses to present to the world. I like to think I cultivate some mystery in what I don’t show to the world. In other words, I prefer not to reveal every inch of my body; I think modesty speaks volumes about who I am and what I represent. I am not saying that I walk about covered completely in a blanket, but for me, I like things that provide some cover, while still celebrating the female body.

My youngest son found out last night that he got his first job! I’m so excited for him! It’s only part-time at a fast-food restaurant, but he is still in high school so he can’t take on too many additional projects. This is a huge accomplishment for him. He applied on his own and didn’t tell me until after he sent his application in. I took him to the interview and he thought he didn’t get it because he didn’t hear back from them right away. But he received an email last night asking him to come to orientation.
First jobs are always exciting in my opinion. He’ll feel that little streak of independence with something that is completely outside our family world. And then once that first paycheck comes in…..I’m sure it will feel like a million bucks to him!
My first job was at a Roy Rogers restaurant. Remember those? Maybe I’m dating myself. I had to wear a red polyester short-sleeve shirt, a denim overall dress, nude-colored nylons and – this is the best part – a cowboy hat.

When I was little, my mom used to make pumpkin soup every Halloween. She would scrape out all the meat in a pumpkin and then boil it down until the meat was tender. She would then add some half and half, salt and pepper and heat it through. In the meantime, she would have egg noodles boiling on a back burner. When they were done, she would drain them and set a ladle full in each of our bowls. Over that, she would pour the pumpkin soup mixture. I’ll be honest, it may not have looked appetizing at the time, but it was still the best tasting soup I ever had.
I looked forward to eating that soup every Halloween. In my eyes, it heralded the official start of fall in our house. I knew that no matter how cool the autumn evenings would get, that pumpkin soup would warm me right through. Continue reading “Poncho Sweater, Burgundy Booties and the Ageless Style Linkup”
One of the first things I learned since I started blogging a few months ago is that there is an incredible support community surrounding female bloggers over 40. I follow quite a few of these bloggers and they are always offering encouragement and inspiration to others as well as sharing their own life experiences. It is an amazing network. For a new blogger like me, reading these women’s stories and seeing their styles is incredibly educational, eye-opening and just plain fun. So I jumped on the kimono train, but I have mixed feelings about this popular piece. I’ve seen kimonos styled by many other bloggers and have also seen them worn a little around town. I like the way they look, but I just couldn’t figure out how to wear them for me. Then I saw this one and fell in love with the colors. I picked it up early in the summer and it proceeded to hang in my closet. All. Summer. Long. Continue reading “Mixing It Up With a Floral Kimono and Striped Tee”
Welcome back to my roundup of fall trends for 2017! This week I covered animal prints and the color red, both trends that the fashion experts say we’ll be seeing a lot of this fall. Today, I’m showing one more trend: the long cardigan. Continue reading “The Long and Short of It”
