Mixing It Up With a Floral Kimono and Striped Tee

So I jumped on the kimono train, but I have mixed feelings about this popular piece. I’ve seen kimonos styled by many other bloggers and have also seen them worn a little around town. I like the way they look, but I just couldn’t figure out how to wear them for me. Then I saw this one and fell in love with the colors. I picked it up early in the summer and it proceeded to hang in my closet. All. Summer. Long. Continue reading “Mixing It Up With a Floral Kimono and Striped Tee”

Dressing Up a Denim Skirt

I mentioned earlier this summer that I started Weight Watchers. I am happy to report that I am a half pound away from my goal! It has not been easy, but by sticking to the plan and not denying myself the foods that I love (hello, chocolate), I’ve been able to slowly lose a little each week. For me, this journey isn’t about looking rail thin, but about being healthy. With a family history of diabetes and other issues, watching my weight will help me keep up with my family and live a healthier life.  Continue reading “Dressing Up a Denim Skirt”

What To Wear To A Fall Wedding

I hate switching out the clothes in my closet when the seasons change. It takes away precious time that I could spend doing something more fun with my husband or kids. I usually wait until the last minute, and then I’m scrambling to pull sweaters and jeans out of plastic bins and from other storage areas when the temps get cold and my closet is still full of summer dresses, skirts and tops.

This year, though, I vowed that I would start early. I’m glad I did because I found this little treasure of a dress that is perfect to wear to a fall wedding.  Continue reading “What To Wear To A Fall Wedding”

Dishing Up a Boho Dress for Fall

Yesterday, we celebrated my son Chase,’s 15th birthday. As we do with all of our kids, we asked him what he wanted to eat for his birthday dinner. To my surprise, he said he wanted a “Guamanian dinner.”  My mom is from Guam and I remember eating plenty of Guamanian dishes when I was a kid.

So I tried to follow in her footsteps and I made chicken marinated in soy sauce, vinegar and onions; Kelaquen (a ground chicken, lemon and coconut mixture); “red” rice made with Achiote seeds; and Lumpia (ground beef and mixed veges wrapped and fried in filo dough). The meal was deemed a success for the birthday boy and everyone else who came to his party.

Creating a Colorful Monochromatic Look

I mentioned in my post on Friday that I was visiting my parents for the weekend. The morning after I arrived I was having coffee when my mom walked into the room. She was wearing the exact same color combination of a blush top and burgundy pants that I had photographed for my blog! I hadn’t mentioned one thing about that outfit to her. I guess colorful minds think alike.

A Long Denim Jacket and A Walk Down Memory Lane

During my father’s first military assignment in Crete, Greece, we lived in Hersonissos, a large village by a harbor. I was a pre-teen then, but I do remember its beauty and its kind people. I also remember my mother gathering with the village women each evening in a circle of chairs outside on the patio of one of their homes. For hours, they would sit, talk and crochet. My mother taught herself to crochet intricate doilies, both large and small, by watching the women. She made gorgeous pieces for me and my sister as well as our children. I still have these pieces today and plan to pass them on to my sons and their families in the future. Each one is a unique piece of art that takes on such a special meaning because they were created by the hands of my mother. Continue reading “A Long Denim Jacket and A Walk Down Memory Lane”

Seeing Red

A quote by American author Alice Hoffman sums up how I feel about the color red: “How could I have been so stupid to have ignored everything I’d had in my life? The color red alone was worth kingdoms.” I couldn’t agree more. Red is my favorite color. According to the fashion experts, we will be seeing a lot of this color in the coming months.
