Fall Transition Outfit No. 2 and the American Dream

Last week, one of my neighbor’s kids knocked on my door in the middle of the afternoon. When I opened it, he said “We are selling lemonade and muffins. Do you want some?” I looked across my yard and sure enough, there was his brother and another neighbor’s daughter sitting at two tables loaded with goodies, an umbrella to keep the sun at bay and a few handwritten signs. I told him I needed to get some money and would be right over. Turns out, I wasn’t the only one who they queried. The kids took turns running up and down the street, knocking on doors, asking people to come outside and have some lemonade and muffins. They had all their earnings in a Mason jar. I loved that these little entrepreneurs were trying their hands at the American Dream. Maybe they will expand their operation next year to run all summer long. A Denim Dress Never Fails

When I want an outfit that is comfortable, stylish, not too dressy but not overly casual either, a denim dress never fails. I bought this dress last summer from J.Crew, and it is on frequent rotation in my closet from spring through the early days of fall. In fact, I wore it on a road trip this weekend to my parent’s house. This is a great dress for when I am working from home the whole day, but it’s one that I can also run some quick errands in and feel put together. Continue reading “A Denim Dress Never Fails”

Finding Pleasure In A Fit and Flare Dress

I am currently reading a book called The French Beauty Solution by Mathilde Thomas, the founder of Caudalie, an international skincare company that uses natural ingredients. I’ve always been fascinated by the legendary beauty of French women. Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot, and Juliette Binoche continue to look beautiful even as they have aged. In the beginning of the book, Ms. Thomas talks about the Pleasure Principle and says it means “your beauty routine should make you feel good at the same time it makes you look good.” She continues on to say that the Pleasure Principle “is about looking good and feeling good for your own sake – not because it’s trendy or to impress other people.”

Adding Layers With A Denim Vest

When I first met my husband, “gardener” is not a word I would have used to describe him. Ever. To me, he was a city slicker with an affinity for the same cocktail, same local restaurants, and a love of celebrating anything and everything, He was definitely not someone who wanted to get dirt under his fingernails. Or so I thought. His garden has now taken over a good piece of our backyard and we enjoy fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and many other vegetables all summer long. This hidden layer beneath my husband’s urban exterior is a welcome surprise to me and adds another unique dimension to his personality. Continue reading “Adding Layers With A Denim Vest”

Throwback To The Past With A Ruffled Skirt

With four teens in the house, it’s hard not to think back to my teen years and wonder did I ever do that? I know I caused my parents angst because I remember paying for my foolish behavior. Car keys were taken away. Extra house chores were assigned. Phone use was limited. Now we are parenting four young men and we’re faced with some of the same challenges I gave my own parents.

What goes around comes around, right? Continue reading “Throwback To The Past With A Ruffled Skirt”

A Polka Dot Dress Can Be A Fun Addition To Your Closet

Our dog, Harper, tried running away this weekend and we were terrified. Luckily, she didn’t get far, thanks to some strangers who helped to catch her. I guess if I had a bunch of strangers running at me yelling and trying to grab me, I’d run away, too. We are just happy that Harper was not successful in her escape attempt.

One thing I’ll never run away from are polka dots, especially a polka dot dress. I love the sheath style of this dress! It’s figure skimming, but not low cut, too high or too tight.

Denim Pencil Skirt

My stepson, Jaekob, is a workhorse when it comes to his sports, exercise and nutrition. He is a regional and state high school champion shotput and discus thrower and he also plays on his school’s football team. He works out at the gym regularly, practices his shotput and discus throwing, and watches what he eats. He is laser focused on improving his athletic abilities every day and his efforts are paying off. He will start his senior year of high school in the fall, and he is drawing the attention of several colleges and universities. We are looking forward to seeing which school he picks to attend. Enjoying the Old Faithfuls In Your Closet

I’m so fortunate to live in a part of Virginia that is easily accessible to so many attractions: the beach is about three hours away; the mountains are a two-hour drive; our nation’s capital is 45 miles north; and Richmond, Virginia’s capital, is about a 30-minute drive south. Summer Cool in a Black Dress

Every morning, my husband gives me a call as he’s on his way to his office. You’d think we wouldn’t have much to say because we talk to each other all morning long as we’re getting ready. But we do! It could be something we forgot to mention, something that came up between the time he left the house and when he calls, or he just calls to say he loves me (cue Stevie Wonder). Our calls last for just a few minutes and then we both get on with our day. But the other day, he called me a second time later in the morning with an interesting request: Please bring me some pants.
