One of the first things I learned since I started blogging a few months ago is that there is an incredible support community surrounding female bloggers over 40. I follow quite a few of these bloggers and they are always offering encouragement and inspiration to others as well as sharing their own life experiences. It is an amazing network. For a new blogger like me, reading these women’s stories and seeing their styles is incredibly educational, eye-opening and just plain fun.
So when I was asked by Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style, a blog for women over 50 inspiring style for different sizes and budgets, to join the Ageless Style group, I was both honored and thrilled. The linkup features 10 women styling something based on one theme, 10 different ways! The post runs the first Tuesday of each month. Please visit the other women in the linkup below for inspiration, fun, and of course, great ageless style!
This month’s theme is “How To Extend Your Wardrobe by Wearing Pieces in Different Ways.” For example, wearing a dress as a skirt or a top, or pants with a dress. You get the picture.
When Jodie first told me of the theme, I knew the piece I wanted to experiment with. This crochet maxi dress is old and is still one of my favorite pieces because it reminds me of my mother’s crocheting when I was a kid. You can read a post about that here. I love how this dress takes a simple long sheath silhouette and adds elegance and beauty with its detailed design.
I knew I could style this dress as a skirt and because of its beautiful design, it would not lose any impact. But what I did not expect was how converting this to a skirt and picking a denim shirt to go with it completely changed the style and feel of the dress. It went from an elegant maxi to a cool western wear look!
My dark denim shirt is from Target. It’s the “A New Day” line. This shirt is so soft and has a nice weight to it – not too heavy, not too thin. You can see how I styled it with red pants in this post. I think there’s a hint of masculinity to this shirt, which made it a perfect “opposites attract” pairing with the feminine skirt.
Although I wanted to add a little bit of ruggedness to this outfit with the denim shirt, I still wanted to retain the femininity of the overall look. This velvet beaded belt fit the bill. I picked this up from my favorite online thrift boutique, ThredUP. Its colors matched the outfit perfectly and the beads add an unexpected sparkle.
To complete my western wear look, I added tan booties. These are the Xappeal brand and they are so comfortable. I purchased these last year and they are still holding up well.
For jewelry I’m wearing a set of antique gold earrings. The color and the filigree design pair well with the skirt. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a photo of my earrings, but I’ve linked to the same pair below. I’m also wearing my brown and amber bracelet from Plunder. I thought its colors paired perfectly with the tans and darker browns in this outfit.
This tan suede clutch from Target continued the Western theme. This was a purchase from last year.
I hope this outfit inspires you to look at some of your clothes with a different set of eyes. Before Jodie reached out to me, I would never have thought to wear this dress as a skirt. But a little imagination completely changed its look! Western wear has never been my cup of tea, but I love this outfit so much that I may go looking for a pair of cowboy boots!
