When my boys were little, I loved visiting them at school. Sometimes, I went to see them during their lunch period and I would bring them a special lunch from their favorite restaurant. Or I’d attend an event in their classroom. Since I worked full-time back then, it was always fun to spend a few extra minutes with my kids while they were in school.
The Cool Mom List
Now that they are all teenagers it’s no longer cool for me to show up in their cafeteria or their classroom. Sometimes I do think about greeting them during their lunch hour with a happy meal or a tray of cupcakes for their classmates on their birthday. What? Is there something wrong with that?
Don’t worry, I may be getting older, but I’m not going crazy and I know my place in the world of proper high school etiquette. However, if you have a little one that you still get to visit during the school day, or attend your teen’s events, here’s an outfit that will keep you on the cool mom list.
A tailored leather jacket over a pretty floral top and bootcut jeans makes you look casually sharp, stylish and comfortable. It doesn’t scream trendy, but you don’t look out of date either. These are all pretty classic pieces that are updated with subtle changes in shape and design.
A Lucky Find
Let’s start with the jacket. This is a classic dark brown 100% leather piece and is thick, lined and heavy. I’m wearing it as a blazer in this outfit, but it’s thick enough to wear as an actual jacket on chilly days.
Usually, jackets like this sell for a few hundred dollars. I happen to stop by Clothes Mentor, a boutique that resells brand name and designer fashion for women, and they were having a sidewalk sale of coats. This jacket was hanging in front with a price tag of $14. That’s right, $14! And it was in my size! I checked it over for rips, wear, tears, scuff marks, etc., and found nothing but soft, supple leather. Clearly, we were meant to meet. With fall here, this jacket is going to be in constant rotation in my closet.
But I’m not the only mid-lifer who thinks leather is a necessity for my closet. Nicole of High Latitude Style recently wrote a blog post about how to look awesome in leather in midlife and she included me! Check out her post and the other lovely ladies she writes about here. My picture that she featured is from this post.
I used this jacket to build the rest of my outfit. This pretty floral top from Old Navy has the perfect fall colors and is a great layer under the jacket. I love these types of tops because they are loose but not too baggy. I also like that this one is not long, so it doesn’t add extra bulk around my midsection or my thighs.
The length of the top is important because I want to show off these great jeans from J.Jill. These are called the Smooth-Fit Barely Boot-Cut Jeans. They are slimmer through the knee and leg than the usual boot cut jeans and they have a bit of stretch to them with a little spandex.
They also have lyocell in them which makes them very comfortable. Lyocell is a man made material that is similar to rayon. It’s soft, breathable, lightweight and has a smooth feel to it. I immediately fell in love with these jeans because of their comfort. Boot cut jeans also help to elongate my legs, so these are a win-win all around.
My burgundy suede boots are another pair from Clarks that I bought years ago. They are no longer available, but I’m linking to a few similar pairs below. My boots have a round toe and like all of my Clarks shoes, they are extremely comfortable even though they have about a 2.5 inch heel.
I’m carrying my suede clutch that I picked up from Target last year. It’s a simple design but adds subtle texture to the overall look.
My jewelry consists of an old pair of flower earrings that match my top. I’m keeping my jewelry with this outfit simple because I knew that if I was really going to school with a ton of little ones around who might be pulling on my arms, I could risk losing a bracelet. Plus, whenever I went to visit my kids, I was there for them, not to be noticed for my bling.
This brings me to the other “hidden” motives behind this outfit. Everything I have on is pretty much geared toward being around little kids. The leather jacket can take accidental spills as long as they are wiped off quickly. The floral top also does a tremendous job of camouflaging spills, juice, paint or food particles. The dark jeans will also help to hide the same accidents and the stretch in them will help you move quickly to keep up with the kiddos. The boots will help to protect your feet from getting stepped on by little shoes (believe me, it’s happened before).
That wraps up my “What To Wear To Your Kid’s School Function” lesson for today. I hope you took good notes. There will be a quiz on Monday.
